Email with Gmail (Google Mail)

How to use Gmail with your own domain name

  1. Click the gear icon (top right) > Settings dropdown
  2. Click Accounts & Import tab
  3. To the right of Send Mail As, click Edit Info
  4. Click Add another email address you own
  5. A popup window will appear; enter your name (as you would like it to appear in the "From" field on emails) and your custom email address
    1. Deselect Treat as an alias (more about this) if you're going to use this as your primary/only sending email
    2. Keep Treat as an alias selected if you're still using your email account to send personal emails; your own domain address will be a choice drop down when composing new messages; replies will be automatic
  6. Click Next Step
  7. SMTP: Keep the default radio button selected: Send through Gmail (easier to set up); click Next Step
  8. Click Send Verification; copy and paste verification code into the text field; click Verify
  9. Once it's added and verified, the popup will disappear and you will see the newly created address added beside Send Mail As on the Settings page; you may now click Make Default if you would like the account to primarily send and receive using that name and address.

How to change your display name

  1. Click the gear icon (top right) > Settings dropdown
  2. Click Accounts & Import tab
  3. To the right of Send Mail As, click Edit Info
  4. Change display name from your name to your business/organization name

How to use Gmail with the Mac Mail app

  1. Configure your mail app to use Gmail via IMAP (not POP3); this leaves the messages on the server and essentially "plugs into" the server as your email box
